Guess who just survived their first novice three-phase?! We achieved everything we came to do! Yesterday's cross country school started off a little shaky. The novice jumps at Poplar are HUGE and much more technical compared to their beginner novice. After seeing the course, shaking in fear and considering wimping out and scratching, we began over some starter fences, then hopped a beginner novice or two, and before we knew it we were rolling through the entire novice course! Just 6 short months ago Lacy was struggling with cantering crossrails calmly and the idea of ever going novice wasn't even on our radar for the foreseeable future. Today, we showed up, confidence boosted and ready to show! So on that note, I completely blew a lead in our dressage test for two strides, landing us in the back of the pack to start off. Pressure off, I was feeling confident going into cross country. That's when it happened, my biggest fear... I came off at the half coffin combination. It was entirely rider error and Lacy was a good girl, and completely honest. Having schooled it, and knowing the ditch was one stride off the large roll top coming down the hill, I slammed on the breaks five strides out from the combination. I was a little too aggressive and in my half-halt, essentially making it more of a full-halt, and Lacy came in too under powered to make it over. She attempted to save us but ended up having to sit down on her butt and dumped me nicely to sit right on top of the jump, staring back at her. Of course, she gave me an annoyed look telling me she thinks I'm a dumbass... Thankfully, being a schooling show, they allowed me to continue my course and end on the same good note it started on! Other than the coffin incident, Lacy had an AMAZING first novice show course! She was jumping very well and for the most part very scopey over the mostly-max height jumps. I was even having trouble keeping up with her as she was jumping out of her skin! Stadium went well, the course offered plenty of turns that kept Lacy busy and not rushing. We tapped a rail, but had a nice, civilized trip! I couldn't be more proud of her in all three phases! (continued)
