Lacy was perfect for her XC school around Full Circle today! We treated it like a show and ran the full beginner novice course after warming up over some of the smaller stuff. I was able to work on fixing my balancing galloping position, riding less with my hands and getting my upper body back on our approach to jumps. Lacy responded beautifully, picking her own spots in a balanced canter and really using herself over fences. She's no longer resorting to running on her forehand or dragging me to the base. Lacy and I are also planning to hit the Jumper Nights at River Pine and a Riverdale mini trial, along with our next recognized event back at River Glen, this time in the beginner novice division! (Insert comment about how every barn within the north AL-TN area is named River something.) I'm excited to finally have a busy competition schedule ahead of me. As a working student I'm starting to see all of my hard work pay off and it is making the long hours and mild-starvation budget worth it. Little Lacy is growing up! Last saturday we entered in the Poplar Place May Day Classic show and bumped Lacy up to beginner novice. Two out of three phases went beautifully. Lacy offered a pleasant and polite dressage test complete with all of her gaits at appropriate times, correct circle geometry and I'd say 60% roundness. Not bad at all for her. The judge scored us an honest low-40s and we took it. Stadium was a complete wreck. Lacy somehow got her tongue over the bit in the walk between the warmup and the stadium ring. She blasted around the ring at warp speed, tongue out, nose to the sky, and chipping in at literally every single fence. I mean literally. She added where I didn't even think it was possible to add and jumped over her shoulder like a complete moose at every fence, taking off and landing all fours every time. RIP kidneys. Somehow we still only managed one rail down. I'm sure Debi no longer claimed me by that point. By XC we had all of our tack in order, confidence only slightly shaken and ego in check. Lacy rocked it! I think she likes the more open space to move around and the hills worked in my favor. There were one or two fences I could tell she was a little unsure, a little tense with her front end (this photo) but she never thought twice about going over them and put herself in the right places every time to make it over. By the end of the day we ended up moving up from our dressage placing of 6th to a lovely and entirely unexpected 3rd place! Not bad at all for our first move-up to beginner novice. I continue to be impressed with my cheap little thoroughbred from Marion, AL. So glad I stuck her out. Nautica and I LOVE this Sunflower Suncoat we bought from @carouseltackshoppe! One of my concerns with Nautica getting more turnout in the evenings was all of the late afternoon sun exposure fading his deep red bay coat and black tail. I usually don't feel compelled to leave reviews on products unless they're really, really good but this stuff is awesome! Not only does it condition his coat but it also has SPF protection and smells amazing. His hair is staying super dark and shiny using it every day and I'm thinking he likes it as well since he has quickly gotten over his fear of spray bottles.
